The Rising Trend of Athleisure among Urban Women

As more and more women – especially the millennials, continue to trade in their revered high heels for a pair of sporty, casual sneakers, it’s evident that the athleisure trend has come to stay. With athleisure, the hitherto obsolete juicy tracksuits and the baseball caps that used to look "boyish" are now beginning to fill up the front windows of fashion stores.

But What Is Athleisure?

In a simpler definition, Athleisure = Athletic + Leisure.

According to the Merriam-Webster’s definition, athleisure is the “casual clothing designed to be worn for exercising and general use.”

And while your spellcheck may still be finding it difficult understanding the word, if you prefer to wear athletic wear daily whether for casual or outing purpose, then you have also adopted the athleisure trend.

Designed in various styles, women's athleisure wear include jogger pants, yoga pants, sweatpants, shorts, gym stringers, gym tanks, sneakers, hoodies, sports bras, shoes, and others.

How Did Athleisure Come To Be?

Although it's quite tough to pinpoint where exactly the athleisure trend started, however, the emergence of the trend can be traced back to the 1970's when physical fitness began to gain popularity.

In this era, fitness enthusiasts were getting more active, and people also began to exercise with casual clothing. Meanwhile, sports brands on their path, started improvising wears for athletic performance.

What always follow a wide adoption is innovation. This also was the case with athletic wears as innovation quickly kicked in, and the quality of these clothing significantly improved.

Consequently, we started seeing wears made of nylon, lycra, spandex, and other synthetic fiber material. The core functionalities of these wears included extra stretch, sweating-wicking capability, and softer feel. Meanwhile, these functionalities have now become the selling points for many cloth brands.

The Emergence of Athleisure

There's only one reason why women wear casual wear, and that's to be comfortable. And make no mistake about it, there's nothing more comforting than activewear.

Many reputable athletic brands have recognized this and are therefore beginning to evolve into athleisure wear brands. Athleisure is the new casual as women are now able to turn their activewear into casual and leisurewear effortlessly. Little wonder the athleisure sales continue to rise.

But Why Is The Athleisure So Popular Among Women?

Athleisure, love it or hate it, has come to stay. For most women, athleisure is more than just a trend.

And here’s why:

Athleisure is a beautiful blend of urban, sports and fashion. What this means is that women see athleisure as a complete lifestyle (with a cult following)

Considering the fast-paced lifestyle of women which involves juggling between working out, family, studying or working and hanging out with friends, athleisure is the only wear that lets women squeeze as much as possible into a day. With athleisure, women can go to work in the morning, have lunch with a date, pick up groceries, and even make a stop at the gym; all in a single outfit! And by that, money, time and other resources would have been saved.

But that’s not all.

For many women who always prefer comfortable and supportive clothes, athleisure lets them have a multiple of options. Unlike everyday shoes, for instance, sandshoes provide enhanced back support, comfort and posture. Leggings are known to provide better mobility than jeans and skirts. What about sports bras, they give more support and comfort to women than the regular bras.

For the women who have adopted the athleisure trend, they tend to participate in fitness activities when the opportunity presents itself.

But beyond the comfort that this trend offers women, athleisure also means that women don’t have to spend hours fussing around with their hair or putting on makeup. What this means is that, more than ever, women now have more chances of wearing a hat or a sunglass any day to anywhere.

Here’s Why Athleisure Trend Will Not Fade out Anytime Soon among Women

Amid reports suggesting that there’s been a decline in the sales of athletic wear, some cynics are beginning to ask if perhaps the athleisure trend is a bubble that is about to burst.

According to Matt Powell, a senior sports industry advisor at NPD, the answer is no. “There is no indication that the athleisure customer is spending their money on other footwear and apparel,” Matt confirms.

There are plenty of reasons why athletic wear will continue to be adorned as casual wear by women, and some of them include:

#1 Comfort and Easy-Going Lifestyle

Athleisure wear have gained wide acceptance because they can be worn anytime and anywhere. And for this reason, athleisure wear continue to attract more people and not just fitness enthusiasts alone. Unlike normal wear, Athleisure wear are durable and wrinkle-free. Therefore, as many people continue to wear them, brands also continue to manufacture them.

#2 Endorsement by Social Influencers

While it may be quite challenging to name the pioneers of the athleisure trend, some A-list celebrities like Beyoncé and Rihanna are largely reputed to have brought athleisure to the fore.

And with the power of social media, these social influencers have been able to transform the athleisure trend into a lifestyle.

All a brand need do to popularize their latest luxury yoga pant is have a favorite celebrity like Kendell Jenner wear it and share on her social media network. And voila, people are already buying!

#3 Weather-Adaptive

Whether it is spring or fall, athleisure is ideal for any weather.

During the winter, there are athletic coats and hoodies to keep you warm. Similarly, there are also the sweat-absorbing fabrics that you can wear during the summer. These summer wear mob up moisture on your body and keep it fresh and dry. Regardless of the season, the athleisure market has got weather-adaptive clothes for all women.

Until athleisure, never has the chic fashion been this comfortable. And with its blend of function and fashion, is there any wonder why women are choosing yoga pants over a jean pant or a sundress? Well, your guess is as good as ours!
